Boiler feed water is made of makeup water and return condensate. Two major types of boiler water treatment are internal water treatment and external water treatment. Boiler water is provided by the boiler feed water from the boiler as either heated water or steam. External treatment is the reduction or removal of impurities from water outside the boiler.

At this point in the boiler feed water treatment process any condensate being returned to the system will mix with the treated makeup water and enter the deaeration or degasification process. Internal treatment is also required for the conditioning of impurities within the boiler system to control corrosion as reactions occur in the boiler itself and the steam pipelines. Part of the steam is vented carrying with it the bulk of the dissolved oxygen.
